AN INTRODUCTION TO THE
SATTER EATING COMPETENCE MODEL
The pervasive influence of diet culture has perpetuated generational cycles of unhealthy relationships with food and self. As a result, many of our patients, even those not presenting meeting criteria for eating disorder are caught in patterns of food anxiety, body dissatisfaction, and disordered attitudes and behaviors about eating with little relief.
Many mental health and nutrition professionals have adopted weight-neutral, non-diet approaches that include normalizing eating through internal trust and regulation. And while some are familiar with the work of Ellyn Satter, Registered Dietician and Family Therapist, she is best known for her work around childhood feeding. Fewer know of her adult Eating Competence Model, an evidence based, holistic and comprehensive framework that supports one in developing a healthy relationship with food and self.
This 3-hour continuing education workshop introduces attendees to the core principles of Satter’s Eating Competence Model (ecSatter), explores what sets it apart from other weight-neutral, non-diet approaches, and how they it can be integrated into practice with clients who struggle with food and body related anxiety as well as disordered eating behaviors including yo-yo dieting (cycles of restraint and disinhibition).
Join Keira as she guides you through a personal and professional discovery of the Satter Eating Competence model. The workshop will explore the foundational capacities of eating competence. Building on that understanding, she’ll draw from years of clinical experience to provide learners with tools that will enhance their clinical practice. Whether new to addressing clients’ concerns about their eating or a seasoned eating disorders professional, workshop participants will come away with important information and tools enhancing clinical practice to help clients restore normal (even joyful) eating.
